Libraries are institutions, but they are made great by individuals. In that spirit, United for Libraries (the Friends and trustees arm of the American Library Association) has opened a call for two special prizes intended to spotlight individuals who have truly gone above and beyond in service to their libraries.

2025 ALA Trustee Citation:
In the United States, upwards of 60,000 citizens are library board members / trustees. In many cases and places, these leaders are their library’s most stalwart and vocal supports. In recognition of this fact, ALA awards an annual Trustee Citation to an individual who has made exemplary contributions in this capacity. Click here for more details. Applications must be received no later than Thursday, March 3.

Paul Howard Award: ALA also seeks nominations for the biennial Paul Howard Award for Courage. Its intent is to honor “a librarian, library board, library group [such as Friends], or an individual who has exhibited unusual courage for the benefit of library programs or services.” One winner will receive $1,000 – and a 24k gold-framed plaque recognizing their  fortitude and achievement in times of difficulty. Click here for more details. If interested, be sure to submit by Saturday, March 1.
