Library Service on the Move"

Change is the only constant. So said an ancient philosopher, but any modern-day librarian can vouch for the truth of that statement.

dimassis.jpgIn order to remain relevant and valued, public libraries are constantly tweaking their material offerings and service package. Twenty-five years ago, computers in libraries were an anomaly. Fifteen years ago, no libraries loaned e-books. Nowadays, who can imagine a library without these amenities? One wonders what a “standard” library will look like another decade or two down the road.

We can glean hints, here and there, from forward-thinking libraries of today. These come in all sizes. One such is the Beloit (WI) Public Library. Located halfway between Madison and Chicago, this medium-sized institution has emerged as one of the Midwest’s true library trailblazers – an institution that actively challenges preconceptions about what a library is and needs to be.

Beloit-Public-Library-logo-image-Custom.pngDirector Nick Dimassis, who has been at the helm in Beloit for the past five years, is the catalyst behind most of the recent changes. Fortunately for us, he also knows the Minnesota landscape well. Prior to his current post, Dimassis helmed the Carver County Library, and held leadership posts within the Hennepin County Library and East Central Regional Library system.

In early October, MALF is bringing Dimassis “home” for a three-day run of workshops across Minnesota. He will package everything he has learned and implemented into a Friends-specific workshop with the working title: “Storming the Forts: Library Services on the Move.” In a nutshell, the day’s focus will be on ways in which Friends can assist their library along its journey to ‘service excellence.’

Save the date! “Storming the Forts” is coming to the following libraries.
