Applications Window for 2013 Overnight Website Challenge Now Open

It is hard to overstate the important role of the digital sphere in modern-day librarianship. For most American libraries systems, a central and well-maintained website functions almost like a second front door. Indeed, in many, there is a small but growing minority of patrons who interact with the library almost exclusively through the Internet.

This being the case, perhaps it’s not surprising that many enterprising Friends of the Library groups have followed suit, with either a full-fledged website of their own or a portal on the library’s site.

Have you and your Friends organization been interested in doing the same, but lacked the resources and expertise? 2013 might be your year. The Nerdery, a Minnesota-based tech agency specializing in website and interactive media projects, is now accepting candidate entries for its sixth-annual “Overnight Website Challenge.”

Argue your case well and be willing to pull an all-nighter, and you could walk away with a brand new website, pro bono.

The beauty of the Overnight Website Challenge is that the ‘challenge’ is not yours. Each year, The Nerdery invites website specialists and related professionals from throughout the metro to volunteer their services on behalf of deserving non-profits.

Viable candidate organizations must:

  • Be based in Minnesota              
  • Have 501(c)3 non-profit status
  • Have at least one decision maker present at all times during the event (March 9-10)
  • Have clearly defined objectives for enhanced online capabilities, and be able to articulate their organization’s mission and needs to a team of web pros

In its first five years, The Nerdery Overnight Website Challenge has generated the equivalent of $3 million in professional services for 96 worthy non-profits. Yours could be next!

The application deadline is Friday, February 8. “Winners” will be notified and given time to prepare their ideas and requirements by February 18.  The event itself will be held March 9-10 at the University of Minnesota's Continuing Education Conference Center in St. Paul.
