Friends of the Library Eligible for Special NLLD Award and Stipend

Are you a Friend of the Library intrigued by the lobbying opportunities and learning potential associated with National Library Legislative Day (NLLD), but put off by the price tag? Consider applying for the 2013 WHCLIST Award, conferred each year to one conference attendee to cover accommodation expenses (plus a $300 stipend to help defray other costs). Nominations are now being accepted.

Your eligibility is contingent on just two critieria:

  • The recipient should be a library supporter (trustee, Friend, patron/general supporter) and not a professional librarian.
  • The recipient should be a first-time attendee of NLLD.

To apply for the WHCLIST Award, prepare the following:

  • A completed 2013 National Library Legislative Day registration form.
  • A letter explaining why you should receive the hotel voucher and stipend.
  • A letter of reference from “a library director, school librarian, library board chair, Friend’s group chair, or other library representative.”

When ready, you may forward your submission via to Ted Wegner, Grassroots Coordinator / ALA / 1615 New Hampshire Ave. NW, First Floor / Washington, DC, 20009. Alternatively, you can fax materials to Wegner at  (202) 628-8419 or email them as attachments to twegner@alawash.org.

The Award is named after the White House Conference on Library and Information Services Taskforce (WHCLIST), an experienced library advocacy group that works closely with the ALA Washington Office to teach lobbying and fundraising best practices to each generation of library staff and supporters.

Applications will be accepted through Monday, April 15, 2013. The ALA Washington Office will contact the recipient’s senators and representatives to announce the award. The winner will be announced at NLLD.
