Minitex Announces Appointment of New Director

Minitex, the Minnesota-based network of Midwestern public and academic library systems, last week announced the name of its new Director. Valerie Horton, currently Executive Director of the Colorado Library Consortium (CLiC), will assume the role in December.

Horton’s portfolio is as diverse as it is impressive. As founding director of CLiC, her touchstone initiatives centered on resource sharing and continuing education. Her commitment to ‘libraries as collaborative environments’ is perhaps best evidenced in her extensive work with Collaborative Librarianship, a journal dedicated to topics relating to open access.

Prior to her appointment to the Consortium, Horton served as Library Director at Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Colo., as the systems and budget officer for New Mexico State University, and as a systems librarian for Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

Valerie hopes to visit Minnesota in the months before her official start, and looks forward to working with the fabulous Minitex staff and deeply committed library communities across Minnesota and the Dakotas, according to a Minitex press release.

The search process to fill the role was an expansive one. “The search committee, [which included] representatives from across the various sectors of the Minitex community, did a stellar job, bringing us an exceptional pool of finalists,” said spokesperson Wendy Lougee, University Librarian at University of Minnesota.

“The engagement of our communities was significant, with well over 150 individuals online watching the public presentations…. Feedback from participants was equally strong, with abundant commentary from individuals across the region. I want to thank the search committee, particularly the chair Linda DeBeau-Melting, for managing this inclusive process. And thank you to all who contributed to this important search.”
